It is typical for an engagement session to come included in most wedding collections with photographers. You may have seen or are seeing this while you are reaching out to vendors. Yet the question remains. Should you or shouldn’t you? Do you need it? Want it?
What the heck is the purpose of the engagement session?
The most common reason couples will take advantage of the engagement session is to use them for their wedding day. Here are some examples of how they are used:
For more people, being in front of a professional camera is non-existent. It’s selfie mania for the most part. So I do like to encourage couples to take advantage of the engagement session for this reason. This is a great time to see what angles, poses and style of direction works best for both of you. All humans are naturally self-conscious about themselves in front of the camera, so get out there and shake off those nerves. Chances are, you are going to rock it, and have so much fun in the process.
There is nothing more that a photographer wants than for their clients to show up to a session (or wedding day) putting all their faith in them. Knowing we know you that can give you the best experience ever capturing the moment that matter most to you. But how is this accomplished? Not through endless emails, I promise. Video calls? Sure, that will do the trick too. But, there is nothing more engaging than working together in person. Allowing yourselves to truly be comfortable with us is all we want. When you are able to do that, your connection with each other in front of the camera will be undeniable.
I truly want my clients to show up and say this is my friend, Jess, and not my photographer. I want my clients to feel like by the time I show up on their wedding day, they know me, and I know them. Building a foundation of trust will flourish the friendship. Needless to say, get out there and be open, and honest and build a connection. You’re photographer thanks you in advance.
All this to say, yes, I think they hold value when you are looking at a wedding photography collection. Are they 100% required, no. But it couldn’t hurt to even make it a mini session to get a little bit of fun, and great images out of it.
